1. Georgia

3. Texas

Located in San Antonio, the Alamo is an 18th-century historic site known for its role in the Battle of the Alamo. Today, visitors can visit The Alamo Church for free — just remember to reserve your spot ahead of time. 

4. Nebraska

Top budget-friendly attraction: Scotts Bluff National Monument

5. New Mexico

The state of New Mexico is known for its rich culture, numerous historical sites and unique natural landscapes. It’s also one of the most affordable states to visit in the Southwest. 

While most visitors head to the capital of Santa Fe, consider opting for a smaller city like Las Cruces for cheaper prices. In fact, this city boasts four museums that have completely free admission.  

Outdoor enthusiasts on a budget will want to add White Sands National Park to their itinerary. Here, you can admire the sparkling white sand that encompasses over 200 square miles of desert landscape. Entrance fees are affordable at $25 per vehicle or $15 per person.  

 

6. South Dakota

Cheapest time to visit: November to January 

Top budget-friendly attraction: Mount Rushmore National Memorial

South Dakota is another lesser-visited state, even though it boasts one of the most iconic landmarks in the country. Mount Rushmore National Memorial is a sculpture with the faces of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln carved into granite. There are no entrance fees, although you may need to pay parking fees.

7. Iowa
