Myrtle Beach State Park
4401 S. Kings Highway, Myrtle Beach, SC
This swath of maritime forest on the Grand Strand attracts visitors who want an escape from the rampant development of the South Carolina coast. The park boasts over a mile (1.6 kilometers) of undeveloped beach—home to some of the best surf fishing in the state—as well as beachside campsites, nature trails, and a fishing pier.
Myrtle Beach State Park protects one of the last wild stretches of coast in South Carolina, making it one of the most popular natural escapes in the Myrtle Beach area. Admission to the park grants access to day-use areas, including the fishing pier, picnic shelters, and the beach. Overnight camping and fishing require separate permits. An on-site nature center features natural history exhibits, as well as an aquarium with live reptiles and saltwater species.
Myrtle Beach State Park offers a family-friendly place to camp and enjoy the beach.
The state park beach has showers, bathrooms, and changing facilities in several places.
The park offers a beach wheelchair on a first come, first serve basis.
Don’t forget to bring plenty of sunscreen, as the beach has very little shade.
Wi-Fi is available at the pier gift shop, ranger station, and campground.
The entrance to Myrtle Beach State Park is on Highway 17 Business about 3 miles (5 kilometers) outside the city of Myrtle Beach. The easiest way to get there is by car, but plan to arrive early on summer weekends, when parking can fill up quickly.
The park is open daily throughout the year, with shorter hours in the winter. If you plan to swim at the beach, plan to visit from mid-May to mid-September, when the north section is patrolled by lifeguards.
South Carolina’s state reptile, the loggerhead sea turtle, is known to nest in the sands of Myrtle Beach State Park, with eggs typically hatching from late July through October. To help protect the turtle population, stay off the sand dunes, and contact a park ranger if you see a turtle or a hatching nest site.
