Zagreb Botanical Garden

Trg Marka Marulićev 9A, Zagreb, Croatia, 10000

Step into the Zagreb Botanical Garden, and experience a luscious, sprawling oasis set over 11 acres. Founded in 1890, the garden boasts more than 10,000 plant species, including palms, aquatics, and native Croatian plants.

The basics

Wander through the enchanting, English-inspired landscape that boasts symmetric French flower beds, rock gardens, ponds, and an array of trees and shrubs from around the world. Tour the stunning glasshouses and explore a world of tropical and subtropical plant species. Come across a picturesque Art Nouveau gardener's lodge, an architectural gem that has withstood the test of time. Stroll past an exhibition pavilion from 1891 and be transported to another era. Even the lavatory and storeroom date back to the 19th century. Some tours of Zagreb will take you past the botanical garden, though you may wish to return on your own to truly immerse yourself.

Things to know before you go

  • Entrance to the park is free.

  • The gardens are open from spring through fall and are closed during winter.

  • The Zagreb Botanical Garden has a restored pavilion and event space that is used for music festivals and outdoor concerts in the summer.

  • Guided tours in English are available; reservations must be made via an online form a week ahead of your visit.

How to get there

One of the most convenient ways to reach the garden is by walking through Zagreb's historic city center. The garden’s main entrance is at the intersection of Mihanovićeva and Gundulićeva streets. If you’re traveling by public transit, the closest tram stop is Botanički vrt, which is served by tram lines 2, 4, and 9. The garden is also accessible by taxi and ride-hailing services like Uber.

When to get there

The best time to visit the Zagreb Botanical Garden is between April and June when the flowers are in full bloom and the weather is comfortably warm. During springtime, visitors can enjoy the colorful display of flowering trees and shrubs, including cherry blossoms, magnolias, and azaleas. Summer brings an explosion of colors and fragrances as the garden's many flowers and plants reach their peak bloom. If you prefer to travel during the fall shoulder season, though, you’ll be treated to cooler temperatures and fewer tourists.

Discovering the best of the garden

The gardens are divided into different areas, including the Rock Gardens, Croatian Flora, and Greenhouses. However, the Arboretum is often considered the highlight. The landscaped English-style garden is the attraction’s largest section and includes over 50 plots and fields with intersecting footpaths. Go for a stroll and discover hundreds of plant species.
