Woy Woy
Woy Woy, New South Wales, 2256
Woy Woy, a fishing town on New South Wales’ Central Coast, offers beautiful beaches, great seafood, and a chilled-out seaside vibe. On a peninsula north of Sydney, the inlets of the Brisbane Water National Park and the beaches of the Bouddi National Park are nearby. Woy Woy is an idyllic coastal getaway destination for nature lovers.
The basics
Woy Woy has been a popular tourist spot since the 1880s, almost as long as it has existed as a town. Then, people came to bathe in the sea and fish, and they still do. These days, visitors can also dine on fresh seafood at waterfront restaurants, take a scenic ferry, hike and mountain bike in the national parks and along the coast, and kayak in the inlets of the Brisbane Water inlet.
Most travelers visit Woy Woy independently, particularly while road-tripping on the Central Coast between Sydney and Newcastle or Brisbane. Some private tours can take travelers to Woy Woy while they visit the Central Coast's national parks, beaches, and waterfalls.
Things to know before you go
Accommodation to suit a range of budgets is available in Woy Woy, as there are plenty of campgrounds, motels, and holiday home rentals.
Check out the seafood market at Woy Woy Fishermen’s Wharf, which is open daily from morning until evening.
Woy Woy’s waterfront reserve has picnic facilities, toilets, showers, a playground, tidal baths, and boat ramps.
How to get there
Woy Woy is a 75-minute drive north of Sydney or a 90-minute drive south of Newcastle. It’s also easy to reach by train from Sydney’s Central Station and Newcastle: Regular, inexpensive trains on the Central and Newcastle Line run through Woy Woy and take only a little longer than driving.
When to get there
Woy Woy can be a pleasant destination year-round. The Central Coast has hot, humid summers and mild winters. Winter tends to be cheaper and less busy than summer, which is ideal for swimming but often too hot for vigorous outdoor activities. Visit in spring (September–November) or autumn (March–May) for warm but not too hot conditions.
Visit the Brisbane Water National Park
Woy Woy is a jumping-off point for visiting this national park, a protected area west of the actual waters of the sprawling Brisbane Water inlet. It contains rainforest and sandstone landscapes, Aboriginal rock engraving sites, colorful wildflowers in spring, walking and cycling trails, and good kayaking opportunities.
