Why do kids get all the playgrounds? That’s the idea behind Amsterdam’s WONDR Experience, with surroundings that bend reality to create an immersive world of magic and delight. Designed for adults and accompanied kids, this interactive exhibit encourages connecting with your artistic side, from dancing and singing to jumping into the nearest color-rific ball pit.
The basics
Imagine if the folks behind Meow Wolf popped Lisa Frank into 3D—that’s sort of the idea behind WONDR. Full of pastels, rainbows, neon, and sparkles, it’s room after room of, well, wonder, from a life-size claw machine to an all-pink swimming pool (and slide) to a funky 1980s fantasy.
Visitors can purchase the standard WONDR Experience ticket, or they can add on two additional exhibits: Roller Dreams (imagine roller-skating inside a disco ball) and Pink Beach (like stepping into the world of Barbie). Tickets are timed, and guests explore at their own pace.
Things to know before you go
- Purchase your ticket online for a small discount—this also guarantees your spot. Otherwise, walk-ups are allowed.
- Kids 10 and under must be accompanied by an adult.
- The space has 14 rooms, and 12 are wheelchair accessible.
- Specific hours just for kids are available—if you’re interested, check out WONDR’s “Kids’ Time.”
How to get there
WONDR Experience is just north of Amstel River, not far from the IJ Tunnel. If you’re taking the Metro, get off at the Noorderpark station; if you’re riding the bus, both the Havikslaan and Hamerstraat stops are close by. Otherwise, nab a taxi or rideshare, or walk over from the Noorderpark or W.H. Vliegenbos.
When to get there
If you buy your tickets online, they’ll list a specific time you should arrive; if you arrive outside that time, there’s no guarantee of immediate entry, so be punctual. If you’re aiming for a weekend visit, definitely purchase your tickets in advance, as that’s when the crowds are at their peak, and you don’t want to be left waiting at the door.
Make a meal of it
For a memorable brunch, head to Pink Beach. Surrounded by pink sand, pink accoutrements, and even a pink ball-pit pool, you’ll sip on mimosas and nosh on brunch, just like you’re at an all-pink Californian resort. Different tiers of tickets are available, too, if you simply want to sip and play.
