White Rabbit Gallery
30 Balfour St., Chippendale, Sydney, New South Wales, 2008
Since opening in 2009 in an industrial building in Sydney’s then-rundown Chippendale neighborhood, billionaire Judith Neilson’s White Rabbit Gallery has blazed a trail for contemporary Chinese art—not just in Australia, but globally. It makes highlights of Neilson’s collection available for everyone to enjoy—free of charge.
The basics
White Rabbit Gallery puts the contemporary into contemporary art: Every piece on display in the four-story space, be it multimedia, pencil on paper, video, ceramic, sculpture, oil painting, animation, installation, or calligraphy, was created by an artist from China or Taiwan after the year 2000. Two exhibitions a year highlight themes including edgy, political topics, such as the meaning of class in the Communist state, or traditions such as China’s millennia-long history of writing.
Things to know before you go
White Rabbit Gallery is a must for fans of contemporary art and anyone with an interest in Chinese culture, modern China, or Chinese tea.
White Rabbit’s Tea House offers a huge range of Chinese and Taiwanese fine teas, from beautiful flower teas that blossom in the pot to delicate oolongs. It also serves dumplings and alcoholic drinks.
White Rabbit Gallery is a welcoming space for people with access needs. It’s wheelchair-friendly, with accessible bathrooms, caters to people with visual and auditory challenges, and assists neurodiverse individuals.
How to get there
White Rabbit Gallery is in Chippendale, in the south of Sydney’s Central Business District. It’s a 10-minute stroll southwest of Central Railway Station and under 10 minutes from the Railway Square bus terminal. Street parking is limited, but drivers can park at Broadway Shopping Centre, a 10-minute walk away; there are wheelchair-accessible spots at 71 Regent Street and on Myrtle Street (between City Road and Paints Lane).
When to get there
The White Rabbit Gallery is open Wednesday to Sunday, morning to very early evening, but closes twice a year for new exhibitions to be installed. The Tea House follows gallery hours, but dumplings are only served from late morning to mid-afternoon.
On the modern art trail in Sydney
Australia’s cultural capital, Sydney delivers a wealth of modern art options, many available to view free of charge. The Museum of Contemporary Art Australia (MCA) houses over 4,000 works by Australian artists, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, spanning media from paint to moving image. Sydney Modern showcases bold large-scale installations by local and international artists, as well as pieces from Indigenous talents. To discover up-and-coming creators, head to Firstdraft, which has championed emerging artists since 1986.
