Wankdorf Stadium
Papiermühlestrasse 71, Bern, Switzerland, 3014
The historic Wankdorf Stadium was demolished and replaced by this modern sports and event space in 2005 and has been the hub of the city’s soccer scene for the past two decades. The second largest all-seater football stadium in Switzerland and home to the BSC Young Boys soccer team, Wankdorf Stadium is the perfect place to catch a game in Bern.
The basics
Most BSC Young Boys home games are scheduled for the late afternoon or evening, making it easy to catch a game after sightseeing in Bern’s historic center. Join a walking or cycling tour of the UNESCO-listed old town to admire the headliners: Bern Minster (Berner Münster)—Switzerland’s largest and most important late medieval church—tops the list, and most itineraries also cover the Bern Clock Tower (Zytglogge), Swiss Parliament House (Bundeshaus), and Bern Bear Park (BärenPark) in half a day.
Things to know before you go
The new stadium was known as Stade de Suisse when it opened in 2005. In 2020, the name was changed back to Wankdorf Stadium, or Stadion Wankdorf.
BSC Young Boys team colors are gold and black. Street vendors selling branded hats, scarves, and other gear generally gather outside the stadium before each game.
There are concession stands for drinks and snacks inside the stadium.
The stadium offers guided tours on request. Contact the team’s events office by email to arrange a tour.
The stadium is accessible to wheelchairs.
How to get there
Wankdorf Stadium sits just north of Bern’s historic center and is easy to reach by car or public transport. Take Highway A1 or A6 (Wankdorf exit) and follow the signs to the stadium. There is paid parking at the Parkhaus Wankdorf Center garage. Alternatively, take tram 9 from Bern’s main train station to the Guisanplatz stop or one of the many S-Bahn lines to the Bern Wankdorf station.
When to get there
By far the best time to experience the energy of Wankdorf Stadium is during a home game of the local BSC Young Boys soccer team. Check the team website for upcoming games, keeping in mind that game times are almost exclusively on weekend afternoons or evenings.
How to get tickets to a BSC Young Boys game
Tickets for home games of the popular BSC Young Boys soccer team often sell out. Avoid disappointment and buy your ticket in advance online through the team’s website or at Ticketcorner sales points. You can also buy tickets at the stadium Fan Shop or the Collect Lounge at the Welle7 shopping center near Bern’s main railway station. Alternatively, check for last-minute availability at the stadium ticket windows, which open 1.5 hours before game time.
