Victoria Butterfly Gardens
1461 Benvenuto Ave., Brentwood Bay, British Colombia
There’s a rainbow of fluttering wings at the Victoria Butterfly Gardens. The destination is also home to carnivorous plants, pink flamingos, insects, and poison frogs. The gardens are entirely indoors, too, making this a great activity on rainy days.
Walk through a maze of flamingo ponds and blooming orchids as butterflies flit about at this family-friendly attraction, which brings some tropical heat to Vancouver Island. Visiting the Victoria Butterfly Gardens is an included stop on some tours—often combined with paddling trips, general sightseeing, or wildlife activities—but it’s also possible to book tickets for an independent trip through the gardens.
With room to explore and educational exhibits, Victoria Butterfly Gardens is a great choice for families.
Keep in mind that temperatures inside the gardens are tropical; wear layers and check any warm coats when you arrive.
The gardens are equipped with wheelchair-accessible ramps. Doors to the enclosed butterfly facilities don’t open automatically, but staff can assist with opening doors.
Victoria Butterfly Gardens are located in Brentwood Bay, about 20 minutes north of downtown Victoria and 17 minutes south of the Swartz Bay Terminal, where ferries from Vancouver arrive. When planning your trip, keep in mind that Victoria Butterfly Gardens are a short distance from Butchart Gardens, so combining the two destinations will save time on the road.
Victoria Butterfly Gardens is open every day except Christmas, but hours vary with the season. Because nearby Butchart Gardens stays open much later than Victoria Butterfly Gardens, visit the butterflies first if you’re planning an afternoon trip.
The Vancouver Island rain forest draws travelers from across the globe, but those trees are lush for a reason: lots of rain. The Victoria Butterfly Gardens are great to visit when it’s raining in Victoria, and there’s plenty more to keep visitors entertained. When the weather gets wet, check out historic Craigdarroch Castle, go whale watching in a covered boat, or book a wine tasting tour of the Saanich Peninsula.
