University of Warsaw Library
Dobra 56/66, Warsaw, Poland, 00-312
One of Poland’s most spectacular buildings—and one of Earth’s most dramatic libraries—the University of Warsaw Library stands out for its postmodernist aged copper frontage, paired with a hot pink steel frame from the original 19th-century structure. But the rooftop gardens, boasting streams, a fishpond, and views across the Vistula River magnetize travelers.
The basics
Like most university libraries, the University of Warsaw Library is only open to students, but anyone can enjoy the roof gardens in season, and there’s no charge to enter. The gardens are a lovely spot to visit with a good book or a picnic, while the contrast with the building below makes for stunning photos. Walkways and bridges make the surprisingly spacious lower gardens good for a stroll at quieter times of the year.
Things to know before you go
The University of Warsaw Library is a must for bookworms, photographers, architecture buffs, and anyone interested in sustainability or garden design.
Allow 30 minutes to explore the gardens, or longer if you plan to chill with a good book.
Picnics are welcome, but alcohol is strictly forbidden in the gardens.
Both the gardens and the library are accessible with wheelchairs and strollers.
How to get there
The University of Warsaw Library sits in the heart of Warsaw, a 15-minute walk south of Castle Square. It’s less than a 10-minute walk from Centrum Nauki Kopernik metro station (Line 2), but you can also take a taxi or a rideshare.
When to get there
The upper and lower gardens are open 8am–8pm daily between May and September and 8am–6pm in April and October. During the winter season, only the lower gardens are open, and those only from 8am–3pm. Plan to visit midweek during summer for a relaxed experience with the gardens in bloom, although it’s worth knowing that the gardens sometimes close for special events.
Where to enjoy the sunshine in Warsaw
Warsaw is a green city: In fact, almost a quarter of its area is made up of parks, gardens, and outside space. Łazienki Park (Łazienki Królewskie w Warszawie) is home to peacocks, lakes, and the neoclassical Palace on the Isle, with the 19th-century Botanical Gardens (Ogrod Botaniczny) close by. For a change of pace, hit Rusałka Beach on the right bank of the Vistula for views across to Warsaw Old Town and lively beach clubs.
