The Durham Museum

Learn about the history of Omaha and the American West at the Durham Museum. Located within the historic, art deco-style Union Station building, the museum offers an array of permanent and temporary traveling exhibits on subjects spanning history, culture, science, industry, and more.

The Basics

Explore restored train cars, street cars, replica storefronts and farm houses; take in the Byron Reed collection of rare coins and documents; and ponder numerous artifacts that showcase the area history and the role that transportation played. Don't miss the Great Hall, fully restored to its art deco glory and complete with a functioning soda shop. Be sure to check out Velde Hall of American History, which houses temporary exhibits from the Smithsonian and National Archive.

  • The museum is ideal for history buffs, train aficionados, and architecture fans.

  • Guided tours are available for groups and must be booked in advance.

  • Snacks and drinks are available at the 1931 Soda Fountain and candies from Durham’s Museum Candy Shop.

  • The gift shop offers a range of railroad memorabilia, children’s books and games, and items from local artisans.

How to Get There

The museum is located in the former Union Station building in Omaha’s historic Old Market. The museum can be accessed from 10th Street and Leavenworth Street. Free parking is available at the on-site 2-level deck.

When to Get There

The museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday year-round, with extended hours on Tuesday. It’s also open on Monday from June to August, and in December. It’s closed on major holidays. From Memorial Day through Labor Day, visit after 5pm on Tuesdays for only $5.
