The Broad
221 S Grand Ave. Los Angeles, CA 90012, United States, Los Angeles, CA, 90012
One of downtown Los Angeles’ most-important museums, The Broad exhibits contemporary art from the 1950s to the present by displaying its permanent collection and rotating temporary exhibitions. The Broad’s nearly 2,000-piece collection includes works by Cindy Sherman, Roy Lichtenstein, Yayoi Kusama, and Andy Warhol.
The basics
The Broad is notable for its extensive collection—one of the world’s leading postwar and contemporary art collections—and its architecture. Designed by architecture firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro in collaboration with Gensler, the building has a bright metallic honeycomb-like perforated exterior, contrasting with the adjacent Frank Gehry-designed Walt Disney Concert Hall. Architecture-focused Downtown Los Angeles walking tours can fill you in on the building’s concept and design.
The three-story museum has 50,000 square feet (4,600 square meters) of exhibition space covering two floors. The museum offers a free mobile museum guide (no download required), including free audio tours, family activities, and artwork details.
Things to know before you go
- The Broad is free to visit, but timed tickets must be reserved in advance.

- Children are welcome, but an adult must accompany those under 13.
- Backpacks, bags, and items larger than 11 x 17 x 8 inches (28 x 43 x 20 centimeters) are prohibited inside the museum.
How to get there
The closest Metro rail stop is the Civic Center/Grand Park Station, a 5-minute walk away. The nearest Metro bus stations are 1st & Grand and Grand/3rd, less than a 5-minute walk away. If you drive, you can find paid parking under the museum (the Broad offers validation at its garage) or adjacent garages and lots around Grand Avenue.
When to get there
The Broad is open from late morning until early evening from Tuesday through Sunday (it remains open later into the evening on Thursdays). It is closed on Mondays, Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day. You could spend half a day exploring the museum, but give yourself at least one hour to see the highlights.
Yayoi Kusama’s Infinity Mirror Rooms
The Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama is best known for her dazzlingly disorientating installations known as “Infinity Mirror Rooms.” The Broad has two immersive mirror installations in its collection: “Infinity Mirrored Room—The Souls of Millions of Light Years Away” (2013), which requires reservations, and ”Longing for Eternity” (2017), which does not require reservations.
