Tennessee Theatre
604 S Gay St, Knoxville, TN
Built as a cinema hall in 1928, the Tennessee Theatre is now a live performance venue. Thanks to excellent staging and lighting technology, it’s among Knoxville’s most popular spots to see a show. It’s also the Official State Theatre of Tennessee and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Some Knoxville tours, including self-guided audio tours, will take you to the outside of the theatre, but if you want to go inside, you’ll need to sign up for a tour. These 2-hour experiences visit the lobby, the auditorium, the stage, the dressing rooms, and the projection booth. They usually only take place on select summer Saturdays, but groups of 10 or more can arrange a private tour with at least one month’s notice.
Non-professional photography is allowed during tours but is restricted during some shows.
Outside food and beverages, large backpacks, purses, and pocket knives are prohibited.
The theater is wheelchair-accessible. Accessible seating info is available on the website. All restrooms are accessible.
A small gift shop sells souvenir t-shirts, keychains, and other gifts.
Tennessee Theatre is in the heart of historic Knoxville, across the street from the East Tennessee Historical Society and Museum and a kiddy corner from Charles Krutch Park. The area is accessible on foot, and public parking is available nearby. Bus lines 83 and 85 stop nearby.
The best time to visit the Tennessee Theatre depends on what shows you want to see, and it's wise to check ahead for details about upcoming performances. You can tour the building if you don’t want to attend a show but want to see the interiors. These are held during the summertime on select Saturdays and last roughly two hours.
A couple of blocks from the Tennessee Theatre, Knoxville's Market Square is the de facto heart of the city. It's flanked by shops and restaurants, making it a good place to just hang out. There's also a seasonal play fountain where kids can cool off on hot summer days.
