Tenikwa Wildlife Centre
The Crags, Plettenberg Bay, South Africa, 6602
Tenikwa Wildlife Centre sits along South Africa’s southern coast—the region known as the Garden Route is one of the country’s most beautiful areas. Scenic roads look over windswept beaches, with craggy hills rising in the background. At the center, learn about the area’s biodiversity as you watch big cats at play.
The basics
Tenikwa Wildlife Centre is a perfect spot for those looking for an intimate and informative wildlife experience. The center focuses on rehabilitating injured animals, and visitors can view animals that will not be released and learn about them in a safe environment. Here, you’ll see big cats, including servals, cheetahs, lions, and a leopard, some of whom were rescued from illegal ownership.
For a longer trip, you can choose from accommodation options on the center's grounds, ranging from relaxed, self-catered cabins to posh suites.
Things to know before you go
As a facility focused on animal care and rehabilitation, Tenikwa does not offer photos with or opportunities to interact with animals.
Some tours offered by Tenikwa are not accessible for those in wheelchairs.
Follow the instructions of your guide for your safety and that of the animals.
Wear sturdy walking shoes to enjoy exploring the center and its grounds.
How to get there
It’s a 25-minute drive east of the N2 highway from Plettenberg Bay by car. This cozy seaside town is an ideal stop for those exploring the Garden Route, with surf breaks along the beach. Nearby, you’ll find other wildlife centers, including the Birds of Eden bird sanctuary and the Plettenberg Bay Elephant Sanctuary.
When to get there
March is an excellent month to visit the Garden Route, with cooler temperatures and dryer weather. The holiday rush ends by South Africa’s autumn, offering a peaceful time to visit. For the center itself, tours start early in the morning when the cats are the most active. Pick an early tour to see them in their element, or wait till late afternoon to visit in time for their feeding.
Take your time with a full-day experience
If you want a unique tour, opt for the Cats in Conservation experience. You’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at Tenikwa while learning about the animals that call it home. This is the tour for the ultimate animal lover; you’ll watch the big cats as they move throughout their day and gain insight into the vital work done by the center.
