Takhini Hot Pools
Whitehorse, YT
The Takhini Hot Springs has drawn visitors to its natural mineral waters for more than 100 years. Water enters the first of two large pools at 108°F (42°C) and gradually cools to 98.6°F (37°C) in the lower pool. Nestled in the Yukon wilderness, visitors have the chance to spot wildlife—and maybe even the northern lights—while basking in the springs.
The spring’s close proximity to Whitehorse makes this one of the most visited destinations in the Yukon. Visitors can stay at an onsite campground or hostel and hike, bike, snowshoe, or ski on the adjacent trails network. Tours to the area combine the soak with nearby attractions such as a visit to a wildlife preserve or dog sledding. Visit in the fall for a tour that includes canoeing on the Takhini River and northern lights viewing.
- Don’t forget to bring a bathing suit, towel, and flip-flops to wear in the changing rooms and showers.
- The pools are family friendly but kids cannot swim after dark.
- Amenities are limited after leaving Whitehorse so bring food and drinks.
- Alcohol is not allowed at the springs.
- There is no Wi-Fi and limited cell coverage at Takhini Hot Springs.
The pools are located 18 miles from Whitehorse and are easily accessible by car with a 30-minute drive on paved roads that are open year round. Whitehorse has an international airport and is the main hub in the Yukon Territory. If you do not have your own car, the easiest way to reach the springs is on a tour.
The hot springs are open year round from 12pm to 10pm with kids only allowed before dark (varies with the season). Evening discounts are available Monday through Thursday. If you are hoping to see the northern lights from the pool, visit between August and April. To take part in the annual Hair Freezing Contest, visit the pool in winter.
This contest is open to participants anytime it is cold enough to freeze your hair—below -4°F (-20°C) recommended. To take part, wet your hair in the pool and then let it freeze and mold it into a creative formation. To enter the contest, simply take a photo of your hairdo and submit it to the springs via email or social media. Prize money and 30 free soaks are the rewards for the top three photos.
