POINT OF INTEREST

Sunrise Point

Bryce Canyon National Park, UT

Sunrise Point is the northernmost of the four viewpoints that look out over the Bryce Amphitheater, one of the most visited sections of Bryce Canyon National Park. It stands at an elevation of around 8,100 feet (2,469 meters) and offers a 360-degree panorama over the park and its many magnificent rock formations called hoodoos.

The basics

Most tours of Bryce Canyon National Park stop at Sunrise Point. If you’re in a hurry, consider a day tour from Las Vegas; many of these also visit nearby Zion National Park. Those with a bit more time can instead opt for a multi-day excursion that covers all of Utah’s “Mighty Five” national parks (most such tours also start and finish in Las Vegas). If you visit on your own, remember to download a self-driving tour before you head out to keep you informed and on track, even when cell service is limited.

Things to know before you go

  • Sunrise Point is a must-visit for photographers and stargazers.

  • If you plan to hike, remember to wear solid shoes and pack plenty of water. Sun protection is also a must, even on overcast days.

  • The viewpoint is wheelchair friendly, with a paved trail connecting the parking lot to the rim.

How to get there

Sunrise Point is located just south of the North Campground General Store, an approximately 3-minute drive or 25-minute walk from the Bryce Canyon National Park Visitor Center. While you can drive, parking is limited, so you might find it easier to take the shuttle bus instead. Sunrise Point is stop 14 on the bus route.

When to get there

Despite its name, Sunrise Point is equally lovely at dawn and dusk, when the sun casts a golden light over the hoodoo-filled canyons. It’s also a fantastic spot for some nighttime stargazing. If you plan to hike the Rim Trail, you’re best off arriving first thing in the morning, as the temperatures are cooler this time of day. April and October are particularly pleasant for hiking—temperatures are typically neither too hot nor too cold.

Hiking the Rim Trail

Many visitors to Bryce Canyon National Park hike part (or all) of the Rim Trail, which connects Bryce Point in the south with Fairyland Point in the north. This 5.5-mile (8.9-kilometer) trail is considered easy to moderate, and if you're a fast hiker, it will take you about an hour. For an easier alternative, you can hike the 0.5-mile (0.8-kilometer) stretch between Sunset Point and Sunrise Point in about 10 minutes.
