Sultanpur National Park
Gurgaon Farukh Nagar Rd, Gurugram, India, 122006
On the outskirts of Gurugram in India’s National Capital Region, Sultanpur National Park is a bird-watcher’s paradise. Within a short drive of the city, its wide-open spaces and lake are home to a wealth of migratory and resident bird species, which you’ll spot either from observation towers dotted around the site or as you wander its grounds.
The basics
Sultanpur National Park has great infrastructure for birders, with four watchtowers, viewing platforms, and paths, plus an interpretation center where visitors can learn about some of the species found in the park. Tours departing from Delhi and Gurgaon typically include round-trip transportation and entry to the park. Check ahead as some tours have guide services included, while others allow you to explore the site independently. Most travelers allow a couple of hours, but you may want to plan more time if you’re a keen photographer.
Things to know before you go
Sultanpur National Park is a must-visit for birdwatchers.
On-site facilities include a visitor center, ample parking, and restrooms.
Wear sunscreen, bug spray, comfortable shoes, and water. It’s worth bringing binoculars if you have them.
Wheelchair users and visitors with mobility challenges may find getting around the park challenging.
How to get there
Sultanpur National Park is located just outside of Gurugram, a suburb of Delhi, in the state of Haryana. Most visitors either hire a taxi to take them to the park and back again, or join a tour that includes transportation. It can take anywhere from 1–2 hours to get to the park from most parts of Delhi, depending on traffic.
When to get there
Sultanpur National Park is open throughout the year, but it boasts the most pleasant weather from November to March, the coolest time in this area of India. You can spot birds in the park year-round, but peak bird-watching season is between September and early April, when both migratory and resident species can be seen.
Green Delhi
If you don’t have time to visit Sultanpur National Park, you’ll still be able to find plenty of spots around Delhi to enjoy nature. Some of the most popular parks in the city include the Lodhi Gardens, which are dotted with Lodhi-era tombs; Nehru Park, featuring a long jogging trail and a massive fountain; and Deer Park in South Delhi, with its mix of trails, green spaces, and resident peacocks.
