POINT OF INTEREST

Stockholm National Museum

Södra Blasieholmshamnen 2, Stockholm, SWE

The Nationalmuseum, Sweden’s most significant art museum, is located in central Stockholm and is home to an impressive collection of artworks from the 16th century to the beginning of the 20th century, including the world’s most extensive collection of portrait miniatures. The museum also has an art library open to the public and academics alike.

The museum’s 700,000-work collection houses drawings, sculptures, and paintings, including an important collection of works by Rembrandt and other 17th-century Dutch artists. Walking through the museum takes visitors on a journey through art history as works on display are thoughtfully presented chronologically. Labels are in both Swedish and English, and English speakers can join one of the museum’s regular English language talks and tours (check the calendar on the museum’s website for details). Visitors can rent an audio guide or download a visitor’s guide app.

  • Admission to the permanent collection is free, but there is a fee for some temporary exhibitions.

  • The museum is wheelchair accessible, with an elevator from the street to the entrance.

  • The museum has an onsite restaurant serving modern Swedish cuisine and a gift shop.

The museum is on the Blasieholmen peninsula in central Stockholm, opposite the Royal Palace. Bus number 65 stops right outside the museum, and the closest metro station is Kungsträdgården, which is served by the Blue Line’s 10 and 11 services and is a 5-minute walk away—take the Kungsträdgården and Skärgårdsbåtar exit.

While slight variations exist throughout the year, the museum is typically open late morning through early evening. It closes early (mid-afternoon) on Tuesday and late evening on Thursday. The museum is closed every Monday and on May Day, Midsummer’s Eve and Day (in June), and over the New Year holiday.

The Art Library is one of Scandinavia’s largest specialist libraries on art, photography, and design, covering the period from the Renaissance to the present day. Travelers can visit the library without an appointment. Still, it is advisable to advise staff in advance as much of the collection is held in storage offsite and collected on request twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
