Stockholm Cathedral (Storkyrkan)

Trångsund 1, Stockholm, Sweden, 11129

Stockholm Cathedral (Storkyrkan) is known for being the oldest church in Stockholm, dating back to the 13th century. This magnificent building has been the site of royal weddings, while it hosts the opening of parliament each autumn. Visitors come here to see its beautiful interiors, including a wooden statue of St. George and the Dragon dating back to the 15th century, and for its weekly music concerts.

The basics

Many travelers stop off at Stockholm Cathedral during guided walking tours of Stockholm Old Town. These tours typically provide insightful commentary and pass by some of the city’s must-see sights, such as Stockholm Parliament House (Riksdagshuset), the Royal Swedish Opera (Kungliga Operan), and Stockholm Royal Palace (Kungliga Slottet). For a more luxurious experience, choose a tour with private transport included, too. Alternatively, visit independently or attend one of the cathedral’s music concerts; a calendar is available online, where you can book tickets, too.

Things to know before you go

  • The cathedral is accessible for travelers using wheelchairs; there are accessible restrooms available on requests, as well as accessible parking nearby.

  • Photography is allowed inside the church, but only for personal use. Please refrain from taking photos during Mass or concerts though.

  • Big bags and suitcases are prohibited, so travel light.

  • There are audio guides available and included in the admission fee.

How to get there

Stockholm Cathedral is conveniently located in Stockholm Old Town, between the Nobel Museum and Stockholm Royal Palace. Multiple bus routes serve the area, including 2, 57, or 76—get off at the Slottsbacken bus stop. For Metro travel, you can get the green or red lines to Gamla stan station. Car travel isn’t recommended as cars aren’t permitted in the Old Town, apart from if your vehicle is authorised for wheelchair-access.

When to get there

Stockholm Cathedral is usually open on a daily basis. Opening hours are typically morning until early evening, and there’s an events calendar throughout the week, featuring a variety of Masses, prayers, and concerts. For a more peaceful experience, come on a weekday when there isn’t Mass taking place, so you can walk around the church and take photos when you wish.

Things to do near Stockholm Cathedral

Ideally located in the heart of Stockholm’s Old Town, there’s plenty to do after visiting Stockholm Cathedral. First, take a stroll to the nearby Nobel Prize Museum, where you can learn about the history and accolades of its winners; then admire incredible architecture at Stockholm Royal Palace, where tours are available; finish with a walk around the Main Square, stopping for a meal at a nearby restaurant.
