Stockade Lake

Custer, SD, 57730

While the masses hit up the famous Sylvan Lake on their Needles Highway drive, those searching for more peace and quiet head to Stockade Lake, just east of Custer, South Dakota. Oddly enough, this is the largest of the lakes within Custer State Park, but somehow, it has the fewest crowds. Get there before the word gets out.

The basics

Stockade Lake, at least for now, is flying under the radar. On the western edges of Custer State Park, the lake offers boating (for all boat types), camping, picnicking, fishing, swimming, hiking, and fabulous picnic spots galore. This is one place that isn’t lacking in scenery—it’s surrounded by hills of pines, craggy granite outcrops, and small sandy beaches. The Stockade Lake Trail gets visitors some pretty snazzy views, though the views from a kayak might be even better.

Things to know before you go

  • The lake is technically part of Custer State Park, which has an entrance fee: US$20 per vehicle or US$6 per person.

  • The two campgrounds, while part of the lake’s recreation area, don’t offer designated roads or trails to the lake itself.

  • The park’s entrance fee is not included in overnight camping fees.

How to get there

To reach Stockade Lake, head to Custer State Park, near the town of Custer. If you’re coming from Rapid City, take US Highway 16 south, then continue on US Highway 16A into the park. Follow the signs to Stockade Lake, which is right next to the west entrance. A park pass is required for entry.

When to get there

Visit Stockade Lake in South Dakota from late spring to early fall for the best experience. Summer offers warm weather ideal for swimming, boating, hiking, and picnicking; if you arrive early enough in the day, you’ll likely get this spot nearly all to yourself. Fall visits are also excellent, with cool temps, even smaller crowds, and fabulous foliage.

A dash of lakeside history

Next to Stockade Lake is the Gordon Stockade Historical Landmark. Originally named Fort Defiance, gold-seekers built the stockade in 1874 to protect themselves, as they were violating the Treaty of Fort Laramie. The reconstructed fort is just one local spot steeped in tension and history—hop on a history tour to dive deep into this storied region.
