POINT OF INTEREST

Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center

14390 Air and Space Museum Parkway, Chantilly, VA

Adjacent to Dulles International Airport and an annex of the National Air and Space Museum, the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center is three times the size of the original DC museum and attracts millions of visitors annually. Sprawling across several airplane hangars, it houses hundreds of rare aircraft, thousands of associated artifacts, and interactive experiences.

Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center is home to some of the most iconic aircraft ever built—from the Concorde and the Space Shuttle Discovery to the Enola Gay that dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima during World War II and the Boeing 367 80 Jet Transport, a prototype for Boeing’s landmark 707. You can also try out its flight simulators, ascend to the Donald D. Engen Observation Tower, which offers 360° views of Dulles International Airport, and watch a film at the Airbus IMAX® Theater, the region’s largest IMAX theater.

  • The Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center is fully accessible to wheelchair users.

  • The center is free for all to visit, and unlike the National Air and Space Museum, you don’t need to reserve tickets in advance.

  • The center is an essential destination for aeronautics enthusiasts.

  • The museum’s on-site Shake Shack sells everything from burgers and shakes to ready-to-eat sandwiches and salads.

The Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center is at 14390 Air and Space Museum Parkway Chantilly, Virginia 20151, just adjacent to Dulles International Airport. If you’re coming from Washington DC, take the Metro Silver Line to Innovation Center station and transfer to Fairfax Connector Bus No. 983, which stops at the museum. The museum can also be reached by car; it’s 40 minutes west of DC via I-66 W.

The Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center is open every day except Christmas Day, from morning until early evening. The Airbus IMAX® Theater has separate hours and film screenings that run later into the evening. Note that the museum is likely to be especially busy during the summer school holidays and on weekends.

If visiting the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center has piqued your interest, don’t miss the chance to discover the original National Air and Space Museum, one of Washington DC’s highlights. Located right on the National Mall, the museum tells the story of the history of human flight and showcases everything from rockets to the Wright Brothers’ 1903 Flyer.
