Stretching for 5 miles (8 kilometers) and climbing 800 feet (242 meters), Signal Mountain Summit Road offers an easy way to reach the top of the 7,727-foot (2,355-meter) Signal Mountain. Two overlooks near the summit boast panoramic views of the Teton Range, Jackson Lake, and Jackson Hole.
The basics
Accessible to anyone with a vehicle, the Signal Mountain Summit Road leads to the top of Signal Mountain and its scenic overlooks. Stop at the Jackson Point Overlook for views over the Teton Range and Jackson Lake to the west, then continue on to the Signal Mountain Overlook for views over Antelope Flats and the Gros Ventre Mountains to the east. Some Grand Teton National Park tours include a journey along the road, so you enjoy the views without worrying about driving.
Things to know before you go
While there is no fee to use the Signal Mountain Summit Road, there’s an entrance fee for Grand Teton National Park.
Trailers and RVs are not permitted on the narrow and winding road.
Check the road status before venturing out, as it can be closed due to bear or other wildlife activity, or weather conditions.
Grizzly bears and black bears are active in the park—carry bear spray and know how to use it.
Bring binoculars for wildlife watching.
How to get there
Signal Mountain Summit Road is located within Grand Teton National Park, off of the Teton Park Road. Find the turnoff around 16 miles (25.7 kilometers) north of Moose Junction (south entrance) and around 8 miles (12.9 kilometers) south of the North Entrance. Parking areas can be found at each of the overlooks.
When to get there
The best time to visit Signal Mountain Summit Road is in the summer and early fall. Teton Park Road, which provides access, is typically closed from November 1 to April 30. Depending on snow coverage and weather conditions, Signal Mountain Summit Road may not open until late June or even July, and could close before November. The views from the summit are particularly scenic at sunrise and sunset.

The Signal Mountain area offers several options for accommodations and recreation. You can spend the night at the Signal Mountain Campground or the Signal Mountain Lodge and Cabins, which have cabins and rooms, along with a restaurant, convenience store, gift shop, and gas station. A rocky beach can be found between the two areas. There is also a marina and boat dock with canoe, kayak, and boat rentals for use on Jackson Lake.
