Seven Magic Mountains
S Las Vegas Blvd, Las Vegas, NV, 89054
A short drive from Vegas leads to Seven Magic Mountains, a sculptural installation featuring seven towers of brightly painted chunks of stone, which appear to balance precariously upon each other. It was created by Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone and hints at the contrast between the starkness of the desert and the dazzle of urban life.
The basics
Seven Magic Mountains is best explored on foot, and a pathway weaves alongside the neon cairns, allowing visitors to get an up-close look at the creations. There’s no fee or need to book tickets, as the site is open at all times. A wide range of tours from Las Vegas visit Seven Magic Mountains, including multi-stop excursions that include other major area attractions, including Red Rock Canyon and the Hoover Dam.
Things to know before you go
Protected desert tortoises and rattlesnakes live in this part of the desert, so watch where you step.
There are no facilities at the site: the nearest restrooms are a 5-mile drive away in Jean.
Bring water and snacks, as there isn’t anywhere to buy food or drinks here.
Sun protection and sturdy shoes are a must.
The sculptures at Seven Magic Mountains are accessible via an unpaved path that’s not suitable for wheelchair users.
How to get there
Seven Magic Mountains is located about a 30-minute drive south of the Las Vegas Strip via I-15. There’s an on-site parking lot available. If you don't have your own car, then the easiest option is to join a tour that includes transportation; there is no bus service to the site and taking a taxi can be expensive.
When to get there
The best time to visit Seven Magic Mountains is around sunrise or sunset, when the light is particularly beautiful. You won't see much if you come after dark. The site is exposed and it can get very hot here in the summer months of June to August—bring plenty of water and sun protection if visiting then. Note that there can be a risk of heavy rain during the June to September monsoon season.
Las Vegas for Art Lovers
Sin City has a pretty good fine arts scene: While the Seven Magic Mountains installation is a must-see, there are plenty of great places for art fans within the city limits, too. Highlights include the Rita Deanin Abbey Art Museum, with its large selection of desert-inspired sculptures and glass arts, and the Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art, which has a fine permanent collection of works by Pablo Picasso.
