Serra Cross Park

Father Serra Cross, Ventura, California

Legend says that the original cross at Serra Cross Park was mounted in 1782 by Spanish missionary Father Junipero Serra as an homage to Mission Basilica San Buenaventura. The original cross is gone, but the park is still considered a holy site. It's also perfect for watching sunsets, gathering with family and pets, and hosting a picnic.

Serra Cross Park offers one of the best views in Ventura. The sunsets are magical and often draw large crowds. Those looking to make Serra Cross Park more than just a pit stop can grab food to-go in downtown Ventura and enjoy a picnic on the patches of grass surrounding the cross. Ocean views and the Ventura cityscape make this hidden gem the perfect backdrop for selfies, group photos, graduation pictures, and weddings.

  • On-site visitor parking is available.
  • Bring your walking shoes (and maybe a bike) to hit up the dirt paths surrounding the park.
  • The park is located in the hills at a relatively high altitude, so pack an extra layer.
  • Ventura locals know this site as “The Cross,” “Cross on the Hill,” or “Grant Park Cross."
  • The park can be reserved for special events such as weddings through its official website.
  • On clear days, Anacapa and Santa Cruz islands can been seen in the distance.

While you can walk from downtown Ventura to Serra Cross Park, it is an uphill climb of about 1 mile (1.6 kilometers). Most people prefer to drive or take a ride-share to reach this park in the hills with sweeping views of Ventura and the ocean.

Make sure to check the weather before planning your trip to Serra Cross Park as the view is a large part of the experience. Clear skies ensure a nicer view—one that also showcases the distant islands. Spring and summer are the best seasons to plan a trip to this park as the weather is warmer and you'll be more inclined to enjoy outdoor activities on the grassy knolls.

Located nearby on Main Street in downtown Ventura, this mission completes the story of Serra Cross Park. After all, the original Serra Cross was erected after Mission Basilica San Buenaventura was founded. Referred to as “The Old Mission,” this place welcomes visitors from sunrise to sunset and offers daily self-guided tours. The ninth and last mission blessed by Saint Junipero Serra, it's known for its elaborate gardens, on-site church, and restored artifacts.
