Schermerhorn Mill Museum (Museummolen)

Noordervaart 2, Schermerhorn, Netherlands, 1636 VL

Windmills are the quintessential symbol of the Holland landscape and a visit to one is a must for first-time visitors. Located in the rural countryside of Schermerhorn, the Windmill Museum is located in one of the eleven mills left of the former windmill complex of Schermer polder. Visitors can tour the mill from top to bottom and enjoy views of the surrounding Dutch countryside.

The basics

To understand the important role windmills played in Dutch history, a visit to the Windmill Museum is essential. A film in the Visitor’s Center explains the history of the polder, the low-lying plain that was drained by the windmills so it could be used as farmland. You get an idea of how the mill works and discover what it was like to live and work in a windmill. The Visitor’s Center also has a cafe and sells wooden clogs and other authentic Dutch souvenirs.

Things to know before you go

  • Dutch windmills are a must-see for first-time visitors.
  • Enjoy lovely views of the Dutch countryside from the museum terrace.
  • One of the few windmills in the Netherlands you can tour from top to bottom.
  • The interior of the windmill is not wheelchair accessible.

How to get there

The museum is located 23 miles (38 kilometers) north of central Amsterdam in the village of Schermerhorn. The easiest way to reach the museum is by car and free parking is available. It is possible to reach the museum via public transportation from Amsterdam, but the trip requires multiple transfers. You can also arrive by bike, and the museum has charging stations for e-bikes.

When to get there

The Windmill Museum is open daily from the beginning of April through October and on Sundays only during the month of March. The museum is closed the rest of the year, but groups may visit the mill off-season with a reservation. Hours vary based on season, so it is best to check the museum website prior to your visit.

Holland Tulip Season

Spring is one of the most popular times to visit the Holland countryside. Tulips season runs from the end of March through May with peak bloom typically occurring in the middle of April. Tulip fields surround the Schermerhorn windmills making Spring a particularly picturesque time to visit the museum.
