Sausalito Boardwalk

525 Bridgeway, Sausalito, CA

Sometimes called the Bridgeway Promenade, this waterfront path welcomes pedestrians into Sausalito’s lovely downtown from the south. It’s a nice place to acquaint yourself with the bayside gem and its unbeatable views. Pick any photo of San Francisco Bay and Angel Island from Sausalito and it was probably taken here.

The boardwalk is a half-mile (1-kilometer) section of the scenic Mill Valley-Sausalito Path. You can easily walk the length of the boardwalk (technically, there’s no wood here) in about 10 minutes, but should leave a little extra time to snap photos of the bay and the bronze-cast sculpture of a sea lion by local artist Al Sybrian. Sausalito features on some bike tours that start in San Francisco and finish in this chic waterfront district.

  • The boardwalk has two levels of paths, but the level beneath the sidewalk disappears during high tide.

  • The entire boardwalk is wheelchair-accessible.

  • Public restrooms are near the parking lot between Bay Street and Anchor Street.

  • The promenade is home to Sausalito’s most famous restaurants, including Scoma’s and Angelino.

  • Bring a camera, as you won’t find better photo opportunities in the area.

The Sausalito Boardwalk runs along the waterfront from Richardson Street to Princess Street on the south side of Sausalito. Parking lots and metered parking are available, but ferries from San Francisco can be faster than driving—the ride from Pier 41 or the Ferry Building usually takes about 30 minutes. Biking across the Golden Gate Bridge into Sausalito is also an option.

There’s hardly a bad time to visit Sausalito, which is blessed with pleasant weather almost year-round. Generally, the town is busiest during summer in June, July, and August. To see the town's quirky houseboat-dwelling artist side, consider visiting during the Sausalito Art Festival, usually held on Labor Day Weekend along the waterfront.

Local artist and craftsman Al Sybrian created the photogenic Sea Lion sculpture that usually sits on the foreshore next to the boardwalk in the mid-1950s. Legend has it that he carried the statue to its spot on the foreshore in the middle of the night, where it remained until 2023 when storms washed it out to sea. As of 2024, it’s in storage waiting for repairs and to return to its home next to the boardwalk.
