Sand Falls

Los Cabos, Baja California Sur, 23410

Sand Falls in Cabo San Lucas is a rare underwater phenomenon where golden sand cascades down steep submarine canyon walls like a surreal waterfall. Positioned near famous landmarks such as the Arch of Cabo San Lucas (El Arco) and Neptune’s Finger, this natural spectacle blends geology and marine currents for a truly mesmerizing sight beneath the waves. It’s a bucket-list dive for anyone curious about marine wonders beyond the ordinary.

The Basics

The friction between the tectonic plates of North America and the Pacific, combined with the warm waters of the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez, can form sand cascades. Similar natural wonders typically occur under dry or desert conditions such as canyons, but in the case of Cabo, it’s underwater. At Sand Falls, divers can watch this continual run-off of sand into the sea, which starts at 90 feet (27 meters) and descends to 120 feet (36 meters). Diving tours typically explore Sand Falls and other sites around Land’s End.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Sand Falls is a unique must-see for experienced divers.

  • The waters around Sand Falls are home to octopus, angelfish, seahorses, and more.

  • Sand Falls is often a jumping-off point for snorkeling and diving trips in the Cabo San Lucas marina, and is close to other dive spots including three shipwrecks.

How to Get There

You can arrange a trip out to Sand Falls through a number of different dive operators around the Cabo San Lucas marina. Two- and 3-dive tours are also available, and typically include sightseeing boat rides around the waters of the Land’s End area to see Lover’s Beach, the sea lion colony, the famous arch (El Arco), and more.

When to Get There

The best time to dive around Cabo San Lucas is October and November, when the Sea of Cortez is at its warmest—but this is also when there’s a high risk of typhoons, so you may want to invest in trip insurance if you’re planning a trip in the fall. December through March is also excellent for diving, and you may be lucky to spot humpback and grey whales, along with sea lions and schools of rays.

The Sea Lion Colony

Considered an easier dive than Sand Falls, the Sea Lion Colony site descends up to 70 feet (21 meters) and is a good option for novice divers in the Land’s End area. Plus, as the name suggests, you’ll spot plenty of sea lions sunbathing on the rocks in their natural habitat.

Ways to explore

Visiting Sand Falls requires scuba diving certification—this isn’t a snorkel-friendly site. The experience typically begins with a boat ride from Cabo San Lucas Marina to the dive area near Neptune’s Finger. You'll then descend into depths of about 131 feet (40 meters), making it possible to witness these cascading underwater sands along the canyon walls.

For non-divers or mixed-group travelers, boat tours of Cabo San Lucas Bay offer the dramatic coastal surroundings, but they won’t include Sand Falls. Choose a diving package that lists Sand Falls or submarine canyon diving below if you want to see the phenomenon.

Accessibility

Sand Falls is accessible only by boat and requires scuba diving certification. The journey starts from Cabo San Lucas Marina and is not suitable for non-divers.

Age limits

No specific age restrictions; however, participants must be certified divers to experience Sand Falls.

What to pack

Bring dive certification cards and, if you have them, personal gear—though most operators provide equipment, including tanks and weights.

What to wear

A wetsuit of appropriate thickness

Not allowed

The strong currents and depth at Sand Falls make it unsafe and irresponsible to attempt diving independently. Always dive with a professional operator in a guided group.

Amenities

Dive operators typically provide a comprehensive experience, including boat transfers, guided briefing, tanks, weights, and full gear setup right from the marina.

Address

Positioned just beyond the entrance of Cabo San Lucas Marina in the Sea of Cortez, Sand Falls lies under deep canyon walls off Neptune’s Finger. Access is exclusively by boat, typically as part of a guided dive tour from the marina.

Driving

If you’re staying in Cabo San Lucas, the marina is a short 10-minute drive. It’s easiest to park at your hotel or explore via hotel shuttle; navigate using local signage toward the marina for departure.

Public transportation

There’s currently no public transit to the marina. Most visitors reach it via taxi or rideshare. Many dive operators also include hotel pickup and drop-off.

Best times to visit

Early morning dive trips (first boat runs) offer smoother waters, optimal lighting for photography, and a quieter dive experience before larger groups arrive.

Best days to visit

Most dive operators run daily trips.

Best months to visit

Visit in late August through December for the warmest, clearest waters.
