Rumsiskes Open-Air Museum of Lithuania
L. Lekavičiaus Gatvė 2, Rumšiškės, 56337
The Rumsiskes Open-Air Museum of Lithuania is located in the countryside just east of Kaunas in central Lithuania. One of Europe’s largest ethnographic open-air museums, this museum features reconstructed historical buildings and exhibitions of furniture, crafts, and artifacts all of which reveal what rural life was like here from the 18th to the mid-20th century.
The basics
Set near Kaunas Lagoon, the Rumsiskes Museum spotlights traditional rural life across a variety of Lithuanian regions. Visitors self-guide or pre-book in-house tours around the 481-acre (195-hectare) site, seeing its 150 wooden dwellings, schools, churches, townhouses, and stables. All of the buildings were transferred from different provinces and grouped around a market square and hamlets in this open-air museum. Learn about traditional agriculture; view the old-time architecture, interiors, and artifacts; watch craft demos; and gain fascinating insight into the lifestyles of Lithuania’s pre-Soviet peasants and villagers. The museum is included on many half- or full-day tours from Vilnius and Kaunas.
Things to know before you go
- Visitors pay an admission fee to the museum.
- Plan 2-3 hours to explore and be prepared for lots of walking.
- Many outdoor areas are wheelchair accessible.
- On-site amenities include a restaurant, tearoom, shops, and restrooms.
How to get there
Located off the Vilnius-Kaunas A1/E85 highway, the easiest way to reach the museum is via tours or self-driving. The nearest public bus stop and train station—at Pravieniskes—are fairly long walks from the gate. By car, follow the Vilnius-Kaunas A1/E85 between Vilnius and Kaunas and take the exit to Rumsiskes/Alytus.
When to get there
The museum is open daily but with seasonal variations. Visitors can explore in full from May to September and access select buildings during the first half of October. From mid-October to April’s end, however, only outdoor exploration is allowed. Consider visiting during one of the museum’s festivals, such as Easter or the saint’s day of June 23 or 24, when the site comes alive with folk music and entertainment.
Other Activities at Rumsiskes Open-Air Museum
Exhibitions aside, the museum offers several attractions aimed at families and kids. Check the online calendar for workshops on traditional Lithuanian children’s games and songs, gingerbread baking, and children’s folk music and crafting classes. Or, go all out for relaxation Lithuanian-style by pre-booking a steam bath at the museum’s antique wooden bathhouse.
