POINT OF INTEREST

Rua das Flores

Porto, Portugal, 4050-416

Walk down Rua das Flores, a pedestrianized street in the center of Porto, and you’ll find an array of cafés, restaurants, souvenir shops, and boutiques to browse. Street performers can often be seen putting on a show, while the sloping lane is lined with buildings adorned with panels of the city's famous azulejo tiles.

The basics

Visitors to Porto will find it hard to miss the Rua das Flores as it’s located close to many local landmarks and attractions. Walking along Rua das Flores is also the most convenient way to get from the tile-filled interior of São Bento train station to the Statue of Prince Henry the Navigator in the Jardim do Infante Dom Henrique. Walking the street from end to end takes around 5–10 minutes.

Things to know before you go

  • Aim to start at the northeastern end of the street if you prefer to walk downhill.

  • While Rua das Flores has a gradual incline, its well-paved street is accessible for visitors with a wheelchair.

  • Only a few restaurants that serve brunch are likely to be open before noon.

How to get there

Rua das Flores runs through the central neighborhood of Vitória and is close to many of the city’s popular attractions. Tourists already sightseeing in Vitória, Bolhão or Ribeira can walk here with ease. When coming from farther away, take the yellow Line D metro to the São Bento stop at the start of the street.

When to get there

You can visit Rua das Flores any time of day or night and it’s convenient to combine it with other local sightseeing. If you plan on shopping or dining, there’s no reason to come early, as many establishments don’t open until just before noon.

The best sightseeing streets in Porto

Some streets in Porto can feel like they’ve been made to showcase the city’s beautiful architecture and captivating ambience. The Cais da Ribeira promenade along Porto’s riverfront is one example of this, with its pastel-colored houses stacked opposite the Douro River. Walk down Rua de 31 de Janeiro, which continues into Rua dos Clérigos, and you’ll see more old-fashioned tiled houses, plus two impressive churches at either end.
