POINT OF INTEREST

Royal Alberta Museum

9810 103a Ave NW, Edmonton, Canada

A major landmark in downtown Edmonton, the Royal Alberta Museum—known as RAM—houses more than five million objects related to human and natural history. Alongside a series of permanent collections, the museum hosts changing exhibitions and boasts an interactive children’s gallery that makes it a firm favorite with families.

The Royal Alberta Museum is split across two floors: There are galleries dedicated to natural history and the Manitou Asinîy meteorite on the ground floor, while you’ll find exhibits on human history, a bug hall and the children’s gallery on the second floor. Check out the museum website ahead of your visit, as it hosts regular events throughout the day that you may want to factor into your plans. Most visitors spend around half a day exploring, although you may need more time if you have kids who’ll enjoy the interactive exhibits in the children’s gallery, or events like live animal encounters.

  • There’s a museum shop and an on-site café.

  • The museum is accessible for wheelchairs and strollers; both are available for visitor use free of charge.

  • Service dogs are permitted.

  • Children aged 6 years and under enter for free.

The Royal Alberta Museum is located in downtown Edmonton. Most visitors arrive by car—public parking is available close by at Library Parkade or Canada Place Parkade. The nearest LRT station is Churchill, which is a 5-minute walk away.

The museum is open from Wednesday to Sunday and is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Opening hours are from morning to afternoon, with later closing on Thursdays. The museum is popular throughout the year, especially during inclement weather as a fun indoor activity for kids.

In addition to regularly scheduled events like live animal encounters, the Royal Alberta Museum also hosts summer camps for kids aged 8–12. Check out the museum’s website for more details on week-long camps that feature an itinerary of educational games and activities on themes like paleontology or technology.
