Rosario Islands (Islas del Rosario)

Islas del Rosario, Cartagena, Bolivar

Deep turquoise water surrounds the archipelago of the Rosario Islands, and lively coral reefs swarm with sealife. This island group off the coast of Colombia is home to mangrove forests and underwater fields of seagrass, with white sandy beaches backed by bright green vegetation. Despite its proximity to Cartagena, you’ll feel like you’ve fully escaped the city with a trip to this biodiverse haven.

The basics

Although many of the islands are private and therefore off-limits, the larger islands of Isla Grande, Isla Rosario, and Isla Caribaru draw a steady stream of day-trippers. Full-day tours from Cartagena often focus on Isla Barú, which lies closest to the mainland and houses attractions such as Playa Blanca, Playa Azul, the Bay of Cholón, and the fortresses of San Fernando and San Jose.

Things to know before you go

  • Be sure to take everything you need, as there are few shops on the islands. Sunscreen, a swimsuit, and a sunhat are essentials.

  • Consider packing water shoes; the beaches are rocky, and there is a lot of coral in the water.

  • If you get sea sick easily, take motion sickness pills or reconsider as this part of the Caribbean is famous for its rough seas.

  • Bring cash if you want to purchase food or drinks from beach kiosks—many do not accept credit cards.

  • Wi-Fi can be scarce on the islands, but some resorts offer paid or free access.

  • Many passenger ferries and private boats to the Rosario Islands (Islas del Rosario) are wheelchair accessible, but it’s best to check with the operator in advance.

How to get there

You’ll find the Rosario Islands (Islas del Rosario) located roughly 60 miles (100 kilometers) off the coast of Cartagena. They are only accessible by boat. Fast boats take about 45 minutes to reach the islands, embarking from La Bodeguita Pier in central Cartagena. If you don’t want to be at the mercy of the boat schedule, or share the ride with strangers, consider booking a private boat tour that departs from a less-busy marina.

When to get there

The region’s dry summer (December through February) is the most popular time to visit the Rosario Islands, and resorts can fill up quickly during this time. Thanks to the mild Colombian Caribbean climate it’s possible to visit year-round. Off-season visitors can benefit from reduced rates on tours and hotels.

Marine life of the Rosario Islands (Islas del Rosario)

The crystal-clear waters and colorful coral reefs of Rosario and San Bernardo Corals National Natural Park (Parque Nacional Natural Corales del Rosario y San Bernardo) offer ample opportunities for water sports, especially snorkeling and scuba diving. Those venturing underwater can admire calcareous algae, anemones, sponges, dusters, and sea lilies; spot exotic marine life including spadefish, clown fish, barracuda, moray eels, and manta rays; or head to the Oceanary on Isla Rosario to see sharks, giant sea turtles, and dolphins.

Ways to explore

Popular as a destination for both single day excursions and multi-day tours, the Rosario Islands are known for their scuba diving and snorkeling opportunities, as well as the countless beaches which range from upbeat party spots to tiny pieces of silent shoreline. Protected as a national park, the two largest islands have accommodation and dining options, while others are fully undeveloped. You can explore via private or group boat tours, or opt to spend the day lounging in the sun with a resort pass.

Accessibility

The islands are accessible by boat only—check with your tour provider ahead of time to ensure their boat will be able to accommodate your needs.

Address

The only way to get to the islands is via boat from Cartagena—the trip time can vary greatly based on what sort of boat you opt for. On arrival, you’ll pay a national park entrance fee.

Driving

Most boats depart from the Muelle de la Bodeguita pier, located in the historic district of the city. There is limited parking in the area, and if possible, you should arrange to be dropped off at the pier. Boat options include private motor boats, larger catamaran sailboats, and more affordable shared boats.

Public transportation

The Rosario Islands aren’t reachable by public transportation. You must hire a boat from Cartagena or book a guided tour to reach the island.

Best times to visit

Most boat tours will get you there early in the morning—due to wind and currents, boats start to return to the mainland around 3–4pm.

Best days to visit

Weekdays will be quieter if you’re not after a party atmosphere, but the islands do stay busy throughout the week.

Best months to visit

Visit in February or March, when the days are hot and dry, and the crowds have died down.

Special events

Avoid the islands during Semana Santa (Holy Week), which is the week leading up to Easter. It’s traditional to head to the beach, and the islands will be packed.
