Rio de Janeiro Royal Palace (Paco Imperial)
Praça Quinze de Novembro 48, Centro, Rio de Janeiro, Southeast Brazil, 20010-010
Once a residence of 18th-century governors, the Rio de Janeiro Royal Palace (Paco Imperial) witnessed pivotal moments in Brazil's history. Today, it thrives as a vibrant public center, bridging the gap between history and contemporary culture, presenting guests with art seminars, revolving exhibits, and a library with rare works.
The basics
The Rio de Janeiro Royal Palace is accessible to the public and can be explored independently in an hour or two. It’s a popular stop on many Rio de Janeiro walking tours, and guides often illuminate the site’s historical significance. Travelers with a keen interest in Brazilian royalty may consider taking a Portuguese royal family-themed tour, which includes a visit to the palace, among other regal-related destinations.
Things to know before you go
The Rio de Janeiro Royal Palace is wheelchair-accessible.
At the palace's on-site cafe, Bistro de Paco, guests can enjoy a variety of drinks, cakes, and other treats.
Check the palace’s official website to see what events and special exhibits are scheduled.
How to get there
The Rio de Janeiro Royal Palace is located in the heart of the city. There is no on-site parking, so public transportation or a taxi is recommended. Take the subway to Carioca station and walk along Rua Sao Jose towards the ferries at Praca XV, a short walk from the palace. Alternatively, take the ferry from Praca XV das Barcas station. Multiple bus lines also reach Primeiro de Marco Street.
When to get there
The Rio de Janeiro Royal Palace welcomes visitors throughout the year, making it a great destination in any season. It’s typically open Tuesday to Saturday in the afternoon. As a lesser-known attraction, the palace is rarely crowded; however, to be safe, try to time your visit on a weekday when it opens.
Experience living Afro-Brazilian history
While the Rio de Janeiro Royal Palace is where slavery was officially abolished, it says nothing of Afro-Brazilan heritage. If you want to delve deeper into the history and heritage of the city’s thriving African community, take a guided group tour of the Little Africa neighborhood. This vibrant district offers an immersive experience of captivating music, dance, art, and cuisine while uncovering the profound impact of African culture.
