The 195,819-acre (79,245-hectare) Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area in Nevada comprises a network of narrow canyons, seasonal waterfalls, rock art sites, and surreal rock formations. How to get there

The canyon is 25 miles (40 kilometers) west of the Las Vegas Strip. There are no public transportation options between Las Vegas and the canyon. As such, most visitors either take guided tours with round-trip transportation from Las Vegas hotels or drive themselves, via State Route 159.

When to get there

The canyon and its visitor center are open throughout the year, with reduced hours in winter (Nov.– Feb.). For optimal hiking conditions, visit between Nov. and Mar. Expect temperatures as high as 120°F (49°C) in summer.

Things to see in and around Red Rock Canyon

Because Red Rock National Conservation Area covers such a sizable swathe of desert, it's home to many natural attractions. The Calico Hills are one of the park's most famous sites, accessible via a moderate hiking trail. Spot old agave roasting pits from Native American history along the Calico Tanks Trail, while Willow Springs boasts petroglyphs. Spring Mountain Ranch State Park, adjacent to Red Rock Canyon, was once a working ranch owned by millionaire Howard Hughes.

How long does the Red Rock Canyon Scenic Drive take?

The Red Rock Canyon Scenic Drive (also known as the Red Rock Canyon Loop) takes around 30 minutes to drive. If you plan to stop frequently, give yourself plenty of extra time. The entire 13-mile (20-kilometer) stretch goes along Red Rock Canyon Road and is accessible throughout the year.

What should I wear to Red Rock Canyon?

Hiking boots or walking or running shoes are really important at the canyon, especially if you’re planning to hit the trails. Wear long pants and long sleeves with UV protection to guard your skin from the sun’s harsh rays and the area’s prickly plant life.

Red Rock Canyon is located just 20 miles (32 kilometers) west of Las Vegas and can be reached by car in under 30 minutes. Public transportation options are not available, but many tour itineraries include round-trip transport from Las Vegas.

Driving

To get to Red Rock Canyon by car, get on I-11 in downtown Las Vegas. Take NV-613 to NV-159. Free parking is available at the park.

Public transportation

Red Rock Canyon isn’t reachable by public transportation. You must drive yourself or book a guided tour from Las Vegas to reach the park.

Best times to visit

If you plan to hike, especially during the warmer months of the year, it’s best to arrive early in the day or early in the evening for the coolest weather.

Best days to visit

Weekends can be a busy time at the park, particularly on the Scenic Drive—weekdays should generally have less traffic.

Best months to visit

Spring and autumn are generally the best times to visit; summer brings dangerously hot conditions and frequent thunderstorms.
