Puerto Vallarta Historic Center (Centro Histórico)
Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
Though it’s not necessarily recommended, you could spend your entire Puerto Vallarta vacation in the Centro Histórico (Centro for short), the town’s cobblestoned historic center. From here, you’re a stone’s throw from the Malecón boardwalk and Zona Romántica—and can while away the time exploring art galleries and eateries that seem a world away from the modernized port area.
The basics
A comfortable pair of shoes are your best friend in the Centro, a walkable zone stretching roughly along the waterfront from the Rio Cuale to Calle 31 de Octubre on the south side of Puerto Vallarta. Themed walking tours, which cover everything from the art scene to local history and food, offer some of the best ways to explore the area. When you’re out and about, leave enough time to see the Malecón boardwalk and trendy Zona Romántica nearby.
Things to know before you go
The historic center makes a great introduction to Puerto Vallarta—and should probably be your first stop in town.
Wear comfortable shoes, as the area is cobblestoned and hilly.
Bring sunscreen and a hat, especially during sunny afternoons.
The Isla Cuale Flea Market on the south side of the center is a great shopping destination.
Bring cash to shop at the flea market and for street food.
You can find some great shops and boutiques on the side streets away from the main thoroughfares.
How to get there
Puerto Vallarta's Centro Histórico is easily reachable from anywhere in town. From the cruise port, it’s about a 15-minute drive or a slightly longer bus ride—try the C27 or any bus that says “Centro” on the windshield. Guided tours that include transportation from other areas are also available.
When to get there
The Centro Histórico is bustling just about every day—visit in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat and crowds. The Isla Cuale Flea Market is open daily from morning to evening, but may close earlier on some days. Generally, avoid spring break season unless you’re looking to party; winter is great for mild sunny weather and fewer tourists.
The Puerto Vallarta ArtWalk
Each Wednesday evening from October to June, the art galleries in the Centro Histórico open their doors for the Puerto Vallarta ArtWalk, when visitors can stroll through the neighborhood, engage with artists at their shows, and shop for artwork and handicrafts. Local and international artists are represented, including Indigenous and Mexican folk artists.
