Praça Martim Moniz
Martim Moniz, Lisbon, Portugal, 1100-341
Right in the heart of Lisbon, Martim Moniz Square (Praça Martim Moniz) is a popular gathering place for locals, with outdoor food stalls and bars. It’s also a starting point for the popular and iconic tram 28 route, plus the surrounding area is home to Lisbon’s Chinatown with a selection of Asian restaurants, supermarkets, and stores.
The Basics
Named after a Portuguese knight who fought in the 1147 siege of Lisbon, Martim Moniz Square is built on the location of part of Lisbon’s ancient city walls. Stand by the fountain (designed to represent the walls) and look up to the right to see remnants of the city wall leading up to the impressive São Jorge Castle (Castelo de S. Jorge) perched on the hilltop.
Aside from being a meeting point for Lisbon locals with trendy open-air bars, on weekends a street food market, Mercado de Fusão, brings the square to life.
You can learn more about the square and its cultural significance on a guided tour of the city by foot, bus, bike, e-bike, or Segway. Hop-on hop-off sightseeing bus tours also frequent the square.

Visit São Jorge Castle
Originally built in the days of Moorish occupation, São Jorge Castle has overlooked Lisbon for 1,000 years. Archeological finds on the site date back even further, to the second century BC. The castle was extensively restored in the 1940s and offers visitors a chance to step back in time to the days of kings, knights, and battles.
