Portobello Beach

1 Promenade, Edinburgh, Scotland

Just outside Edinburgh, Portobello Beach provides a sandy retreat with stunning views of the Firth of Forth. This charming seaside destination has a wide promenade perfect for strolls, as well as cozy cafés and independent shops. Ideal for swimming, sunbathing, and picnics, it’s a beloved spot for locals and visitors looking for a relaxing day by the sea.

The basics

One of the best ways to discover Portobello Beach is by bike. Many travelers opt to explore it on small-group bike tours that give you a choice of manual or electric bike. These tours usually pass The Meadows, Arthur’s Seat, Portobello Beach, Leith, and New Town. For a more leisurely day, some travelers opt for a private sightseeing tour with included transport. Portobello Beach is popular with sea swimmers, though the water is very cold so a wetsuit is recommended.

Things to know before you go

  • There are plenty of cafés and restaurants along the beachfront so there’s no need to worry about bringing food with you.

  • Families traveling with children can keep little ones entertained at a nearby amusement arcade and a playground.

  • The local area is known for being a very inclusive LGBTQ+ neighborhood with lots of independent shops and restaurants.

How to get there

Just a few miles from Edinburgh’s city center, Portobello Beach is easily accessible by public transport. Take the 26 bus and disembark near the promenade. If you’re driving, street parking is available but may be limited during peak times. For a scenic route, consider cycling along the dedicated bike paths from Edinburgh.

When to get there

Portobello Beach is enjoyable year-round, but the best time to visit is from late spring until early fall. The summer months of July and August are typically busiest, especially during weekends, so it’s best to come on a weekday morning or late afternoon for cooler temperatures and fewer crowds.
