The sprawling and arid Guanacaste landscape is home to African animals including zebras, giraffes, wildebeest, and ostriches, which you can see up close during guided tours. Opportunities for kayaking, ziplining, and horseback riding make this a top spot for adventurous visitors of all ages.
The basics
You can board a safari-style vehicle for a ride around Ponderosa Adventure Park and come face-to-face with its animals while learning about their habitat and behavior from guides. Other activities include ziplining over the forest canopy, tubing down a fast-flowing river, horseback riding through the forest, and cooling off in a waterfall or in one of the park’s swimming pools. You can choose admission tickets that include multiple activities and lunch, which you can book in advance.
Things to know before you go
To avoid disturbing the animals, the use of camera flash is not allowed.
The safari tour is wheelchair-accessible.
The park has places to buy food and souvenirs.
It is advisable to book horseback riding tours in advance.
Pets are not permitted.
How to get there
Ponderosa Adventure Park is a 15-minute drive south of Liberia and 30 minutes southeast of Liberia’s airport (Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport). The park does not provide transport so, if you don’t have your own wheels, your best option is to take a taxi.
When to get there
The park is open every day, year-round and is at its busiest on the weekends. If you are planning to visit on a Saturday or Sunday, it is a good idea to book your tickets in advance. You should also avoid booking tours during the hottest part of the day (around midday).
Be prepared for hot weather
Temperatures at the park can reach a sweltering 75°F–91°F (24°C–33°C). No matter what time of year you visit, you should come prepared with high-SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, a sun hat, light layers, and plenty of water. It’s also a good idea to pack insect repellent.
