Playa Isla Verde

Located in Carolina, close to San Juan, Playa Isla Verde boasts golden-sand shores, tall palm trees, hotels, restaurants, and shops. Because of its proximity to the airport and cruise port, this beach is popular among visitors. It’s divided into three main beaches: Pine Grove, where locals surf; El Alambique, also known as Hobie Beach; and the Balneario de Carolina.

Your interests will determine which section of Playa Isla Verde you want to visit. The most popular beach is Hobie Beach, thanks to its family-friendly environment, accessibility, and various aquatic attractions. Beach gear, boards, and Jet Skis are available to rent here. Known for its beach volleyball tournaments, Balneario de Carolina has a small water park for kids, gazebos, and a special service for those using wheelchairs to access the water; it’s available upon request. Pine Grove is for divers and surfers of all levels, with lessons and rental equipment available here. Guided Jet Ski tours of Playa Isla Verde are also an option.

  • Lifeguards are stationed at Balneario de Carolina and Hobie Beach.

  • Hobie Beach and Balneario de Carolina are the best beaches for swimming.

  • There are no public facilities at Pine Grove Beach, but nearby Balneario de Carolina has restrooms, lockers, and outdoor showers.

  • Hobie Beach, closest to San Juan, is always the most crowded.

  • Balneario de Carolina is one of two public beaches in San Juan; it is well-maintained and has amenities.

The best way to get to Playa Isla Verde from San Juan is by car. It takes less than 10 minutes to get to the beach from the airport. Rideshare services are also available in San Juan if you don’t want to rent a car. Arrive early to get a parking spot, as this beach is known to get busy in the afternoons.

From December to early April is the busiest season in San Juan, so expect a lot of people then. From mid-April to June is considered the best time to visit the city. The weather is pleasant, and most winter crowds have dissipated by then. Expect the highest temps in July and August.

The capital city of Puerto Rico is home to beaches big and small, but all feature the same picturesque coastline. Here, public beaches with lifeguards and facilities are called balnearios. In addition to Playa Isla Verde, you’ll find LBGTQIA+-friendly Atlantic Beach, Miami-esque Condado Beach and its sister beach Playita del Condado, and El Escambron, which attracts surfers thanks to the strong swells.
