Pillar 7 Experience at the Ponte 25 de Abril
Avenida da India 52, Alcantara, Lisbon, Portugal, 1300-299
Spanning the River Tagus at its narrowest point, the soaring April 25 suspension bridge (Ponte 25 de Abril) is one of Lisbon’s most recognizable landmarks. As well as admiring it from afar, visitors can enjoy an interactive and immersive experience of the bridge’s exterior and interior areas with a ticket to the Pillar 7 Bridge Experience.
The Basics
The Pillar 7 Bridge Experience takes visitors on a trip through the history of the bridge’s construction. It includes a walk-through multimedia tour of the span, including the impressive twin rooms where the main moorings of the support cables are visible. The tour ends with an elevator ride up to a panoramic viewing point on the 26th floor, which offers excellent views of the city and the River Tagus. There is also an immersive, virtual reality experience of the inaccessible parts of the bridge (separate ticket required).
Things to Know Before You Go
The Pillar 7 Bridge Experience is a must-visit for sightseers and engineering enthusiasts.
The experience is not wheelchair-accessible.
Entrance is included with the Lisbon Card and free to children under 5.
Seniors, students, and groups of 10 and up receive discounted admission.
How to Get There
The Pillar 7 Bridge Experience is located on Lisbon’s waterfront, in the west of the city. You can reach it with tram 15 and buses 714, 727, 732, and 751. The closest train station is Alcântara–Mar, less than a 10-minute walk away. The center is also a stop on many hop-on-hop-off-sightseeing-bus routes.
When to Get There
The Pillar 7 Bridge Experience is open every day of the week, year-round (with the exception of December 25). It opens from morning until evening, with slightly extended opening hours from May through September.
Ponte 25 de Abril
The Ponte 25 de Abril is the longest suspension bridge in Europe, measuring just under 1.5 miles (2.3 kilometers) in length. The bridge’s top level is for cars, and the lower is for trains. Pedestrians are not allowed on the bridge with the exception of one occasion: the Lisbon Half Marathon, which crosses the bridge every March.
