Located atop Mitropoliei hill in central Bucharest, the Patriarchal Cathedral (Metropolitan Church) is the city’s principal Orthodox place of worship and a historical landmark. Consecrated in 1658, it’s a copy of the Curtea de Arges Monastery in Pitesti dedicated to Saints Constantine and Helen.

The basics

The Patriarchal Cathedral is a functioning place of worship and a designated historical monument. Largely restored to its original form in the 20th century, its gilded interior features Byzantine-style paintings of saints and frescoes. The cathedral is also home to Romania's most valuable collection of icons. It’s included as part of certain Bucharest sightseeing tours, including walking tours and tours by bike, including attractions such as the Palace of Parliament and Old Town.

  • It’s free to enter the cathedral, though donations are accepted.
