Panorama Tower (City-Hochhaus)
Augustuspl. 9, Leipzig, Germany, 04109
Rising high above Leipzig’s rooftops, the Panorama Tower stands out as a modern skyscraper in the German city’s more traditional skyline. Little about this office building will interest visitors to the city, except for two things: the extensive view from its 31st-floor observation platform and the fine dining on offer from its restaurant, Plate of Art.
The basics
Visiting the Panorama Tower generally fits in easily with sightseeing around the center of Leipzig. Walking tours of the city are likely to make note of it as they show off the neighboring concert hall and the opera house on the far side of Augustusplatz. Allow 20 or so minutes later in the day to come back to the Panorama Tower and visit the observation deck on your own, or make an evening of it with a reservation at the tower’s restaurant and take in the view while you’re there.
Things to know before you go
Entry is only payable with coins, but there is a coin machine on-site for converting cash.
The tower’s observation deck is outdoors, so keep that in mind and dress appropriately, especially when visiting on a cool evening.
Table reservations at the Panorama Tower’s restaurant are highly recommended.
The observation deck is not wheelchair accessible, due to a series of steps leading outside from the elevator.
Visitors can buy drinks from a small kiosk and sit at one of the outdoor tables.
How to get there
Leipzig’s Panorama Tower stands just off Augustusplatz on the southwestern edge of the city center. Walking from other parts of the historical center won’t take more than 10–15 minutes. Otherwise, you can take a tram to Augustusplatz, or if you’re driving, park beneath the square in the paid garage.
When to get there
The tower’s observation deck and restaurant are open daily from the late morning until well into the evening. While you can enjoy views of Leipzig day or night, going before sunset gives you the best of both worlds. Expect the observation deck to be at its busiest at this time, around the late afternoon and early evening.
Viewpoints of Leipzig
While they won’t take you as high up as the Panorama Tower, other landmarks around Leipzig are also known for their views. The tower of the New Town Hall has its own vantage point overlooking the historical center, which you can visit on a tour of the town hall. Farther from the city center, the Monument to the Battle of the Nations offers a more distant view of the city skyline.
