Noordermarkt
Amsterdam, Netherlands, 1015
One of Amsterdam’s largest and most storied markets, the Noordermarkt has been held in the city for 400 years since the Dutch Golden Age. Today, the market—which comprises several individual market areas, each with its own specialties—is held twice a week. A highlight of central Amsterdam's Jordaan district, it’s a destination for ingredients, antiques, clothes, and more.
The basics
To really immerse yourself in Amsterdam’s rhythms—and shop like the locals do—don’t miss the chance to browse at the expansive Noordermarkt. Conveniently located in the city’s central Canal Ring Area, it’s easy to explore independently (or on a guided food tour of Amsterdam).
For the most choice, visit on Saturdays, when three individual markets (collectively the Noordermarkt) are held. The general market offers antiques, clothes, furnishings, prints, accessories, and more, while the Organic Market specializes in fresh fruit, vegetables, and other food items. The Lindengracht Markt offers fish, vegetables, and flowers. On Mondays, the general market and the Westerstraat Markt are held, as well as the Westerstraat Markt, which sells textiles and bolts of fabric.
Things to know before you go
Although the market is located at street level, its crowds and narrow passageways may make access difficult for disabled visitors.
The market is open twice weekly, rain or shine. As there is little covering, it’s best to check the forecast before you visit.
It’s recommended to bring cash, as not all vendors take credit cards.
How to get there
The Noordermarkt is located at Noordermarkt, 1015 MV Amsterdam, in the central Jordaan district. It’s around 15 minutes on foot from Amsterdam Centraal, the city’s major station and transit hub. The 5 tram and 18 and 21 bus routes also stop locally.
When to get there
The Noordermarkt is open twice weekly, on Saturdays and Mondays. On Saturday, it is open from mid-morning to late afternoon; on Monday, it’s open from mid-morning to early afternoon. It’s worth getting there early to beat the crowds, but you may be more likely to score deals if you arrive near the end of the day.
Albert Cuyp Markt
Another market worth discovering in Amsterdam is the Albert Cuyp Markt, located in the southern De Pijp neighborhood. Open six days a week and featuring more than 260 stalls, it sells everything from fresh and prepared food to clothes, fabric, flowers, and more.
