POINT OF INTEREST

Nichupté Lagoon

Cancún, Quintana Roo, 77534

Overlooking Cancún and the Caribbean Sea, Nichupté Lagoon System is an enormous nature reserve that holds seven fresh and saltwater lagoons including Río Inglés, Rio del Amor, Caleta Nizuc y Bojórquez, and Nichupté itself. Surrounded by natural beauty, it’s an ideal spot for water-based adventures, wildlife-spotting, and sunset-viewing.

The Basics

The best way to experience Nichupté is by cruising over its calm waters, and through its mangrove-lined channels, on a boat tour. These slow-paced tours are a great way to spot the local wildlife in its natural habitat, including crocodiles, turtles, and more than 150 species of migratory birds. Thrill seekers tend to opt for speedboat and jet ski tours while there are also numerous operators offering kayaking, snorkeling, and fishing tours—all departing from Cancún.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • The lagoon can be hot and buggy. Wear biodegradable sunscreen and mosquito repellent.

  • Be respectful of the lagoon’s fragile natural environment. Don’t disturb the flora and fauna, and take your trash home.

  • Pay attention to your guide while on the water: remember that crocodiles, while scarce, do live there.

How to Get There

Nichupté Lagoon separates the residential area of downtown Cancún from the city’s hotel and resort area (Zona Hotelera), which lies on the Caribbean Sea. The best way to get there is by booking a guided tour that includes round-trip transfers and a water-based activity, such as a boat or kayak tour, so that you can actually get onto the water. Tours typically pickup guests from their hotels.

When to Get There

Most tours go to the Nichupté Lagoon in the morning or afternoon, which are the best times for beating the heat and enjoying the cool breeze out on the water. However, some tour operators also offer early evening cruises, which are timed to catch the lagoon’s spectacular sunsets and also offer great wildlife-viewing opportunities.

Laguna del Amor

The most visited of Nichupté’s lagoons is the Laguna del Amor (Love Lagoon) due to its notable heart shape. The lagoon is associated with various legends, including one that says that whoever swims in these waters will be transformed into a mermaid. It’s undoubtedly a romantic spot and a great place for viewing the sunset with a romantic partner.
