POINT OF INTEREST

Museum Prinsenhof Delft

Sint Agathaplein 1, Delft, Netherlands, 2611 HR

Art fans in Delft flock to the Museum Prinsenhof to see its large collection of paintings from the Dutch Golden Age. Other museum highlights include tapestries, period furniture, housewares, and plenty of fine examples of Delft's blue-and-white ceramics. The museum's 15th-century building holds interest, too.

The basics

While art is the museum's star attraction, the history of the museum’s building is equally intriguing. The museum is housed in a 15th-century building that has served as a monastery and royal residence (for William of Orange, who was murdered here). It’s a popular stop on Delft walking tours. Not all tours enter the museum, but strolling through town with a guide is a good way to identify what to visit independently.

Things to know before you go

  • Audio guides are included in the cost of museum tickets.

  • Discounted admission is available for visitors ages 18 and under, and kids 3 and under visit free.

  • The museum is not wheelchair-accessible, as it has numerous stairs and no elevator.

  • The museum has a gift shop selling books and souvenirs, a candy shop, and a café.

How to get there

The Museum Prisnenhof Delft is located in the heart of Delft, less than a 10-minute walk from the Delft Railway Station. The closest public transportation is the Prinsenhof tram and bus stop at Phoenixstraat, less than a 3-minute walk away, where you can catch bus 53 or tram lines 1 or 19. Parking is available for a fee at the Phoenix Garage and the Prinsenhof Garage, each within a 3-minute walk of the museum.

When to get there

Museum Prinsenhof Delft is open Tuesday–Sunday. It's generally closed on Mondays, except for school and national holidays. The museum closes an hour early on Christmas and New Year’s Eve and remains closed on Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Weekends and public holidays generally get more crowds than weekdays.

Visiting the Delft Vermeer Centre

Art fans in Delft won’t want to miss a visit to the Delft Vermeer Centre (Vermeer Centrum), a short walk from the Museum Prinsenhof. Here, you’ll find three floors of exhibits dedicated to the famous painter Johannes Vermeer and his life in Delft, along with a smattering of special exhibits.
