Musée des Plans-Reliefs
Hôtel National des, 129 Rue de Grenelle, Paris, Île-de-France, 75007
With a highly distinctive focus, the Musée des Plans-Reliefs in Paris is home to a collection of 3-dimensional military scale models (known as plans-reliefs), some of which date back to the mid-17th century. Set inside the Hôtel des Invalides, the museum lets you experience how fortified towns in France and beyond once looked.
The basics
A treasure trove for military history buffs, the Musee des Plans-Reliefs is inside Hotel des Invalides, Napoleon’s final resting place and a staple of Paris sightseeing tours. The use of these 3D maps of fortified cities dates from the mid-17th century. The models were all constructed using the same technique—explained in an accompanying exhibit—and watercolor paintings show what the cityscapes and countrysides looked like when each model was constructed.
Things to know before you go
History enthusiasts, especially those interested in European military history, will be particularly enthralled by the intricate relief maps and models.
Admission to the Musée des Plans-Reliefs is included in the Paris Museum Pass. This also covers admission to the Musée de l'Armée (Napoleon’s tomb) and the Musée de l'Ordre de la Libération, both located at Hotel des Invalides.
Downloadable printed guides to the museum in multiple languages are available on the museum’s website.
The gift shop stocks DIY models to build at home and other themed souvenirs.
The museum is accessible to wheelchairs and strollers via the Place Vauban/Avenue de Tourville entrance.

Visiting the Hotel des Invalides
Hôtel des Invalides was built in the 1670s by Louis XIV to house thousands of disabled war veterans; today it’s home to several interesting collections and churches. The Musée de l'Armée in the Cour d’Honneur houses the country’s largest collection focused on the history of the French military. There are also two churches: the Église St-Louis des Invalides, once used by soldiers, and Église du Dôme, known for its soaring golden dome.
Ways to explore
From its collection of around 100 models, the museum showcases more than 25 at a time. Some displays, including a 17th-century depiction of Mont Saint-Michel and 19th-century Bayonne, are equipped with multimedia terminals, which feature virtual reality and allow visitors to explore the sites in greater depth.
Admission also includes access to the Musée de l’Armée, Napoleon’s Tomb, and the Musée de l’Ordre de la Libération. The Musée des Plans-Reliefs is included in some Paris museum passes, and you can arrange a guided tour by contacting the museum in advance.
