Mt. Kenya
Nairobi, Kenya
Mount Kenya is a volcanic peak in the heart of Kenya that stretches to 17,057 feet (5,199 meters) high. The mountain is primarily a hiking and climbing destination enticing visitors from all over the world. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is surrounded by different types of wilderness, complete with lakes, forests, tarns, and glaciers, and is home to some rare animal species.
The basics
Mount Kenya is located within Mount Kenya National Park, and has trails and climbing routes for all skill levels. Of the three main peaks, Point Lenana is the most accessible for a beginner-level climber, though should always be attempted with a guide and never on one’s own. The landscape of Mount Kenya changes drastically in a relatively small geographic area: Grasslands at the base of the mountain transform rapidly into the sharp, snow-dusted peaks, which are an important source of water for the region.
Things to know before you go
- All visitors should enter the park with a qualified and certified guide.
- Disposable plastic water bottles are not allowed in the park.
- All visitors are required to check in and out of the park.
- If you are climbing Mount Kenya, luggage cannot exceed 55 pounds (25 kilograms) and will be weighed upon entry.
- Make sure you have plenty of warm, layerable clothing in preparation for changing temperatures on the mountain.
- Wear supportive hiking boots.
How to get there
Mount Kenya is 109 miles (175 kilometers) northwest of Nairobi and lies to the east of the Great Rift Valley. It is best reached by driving or joining a tour departing from Nairobi. There is also a commercial airstrip in Nanyuki, located just outside of the park.
When to get there
As with any mountain, weather on Mount Kenya can be hard to predict, but typically the best time of year to climb is July through August, and November through February. Be advised that due to the change in altitude, temperatures do drop at night even during the dry season. The park is open year round.
Things to do in Mount Kenya National Park
In addition to climbing, Mount Kenya National Park is popular for camping, caving, and game viewing. The protected preserve has more than 130 unique species of birds, as well as endemic mammals such as the tree hyrax, white-tailed mongoose, and suni—a small antelope that lives in the underbrush.
