POINT OF INTEREST

Mount Medvednica (Sljeme)

Sljeme, Croatia, 49240

For a scenic jaunt just a short drive from Zagreb's city center, Mt. Medvednica (Sljeme) offers a near-perfect mix of outdoor activities and fantastic vistas. Known for its network of protected trails, you can stroll, cycle, and trek in the woodlands, visit Medvedgrad—a centuries-old fortress—or hit the slopes at Sljeme Ski Resort.

The Basics

Though it's not the tallest mountain around—at a height of about 1,000-meters (3,280-feet)—the forested mountainscape of Mt. Medvednica is a mainstay for Zagreb locals looking for a dose of outdoor adventure. Hiking and mountain biking are popular in the protected areas of Medvednica Nature Park, while winter sports fanatics can go skiing and snowboarding, and stay overnight at the mountaintop lodges.

To reach the highest point on the mountain—Sljeme—you can hike along summit trails, or drive to the top to enjoy the views without breaking a sweat. You can easily pair a visit to the summit with a stop at Medvednica Castle, Veternica Cave, or the silver-rich Zrinski Mine.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Wear supportive footwear and bring bug repellent to stay comfortable while hiking.
  • Leave enough time to descend before sunset—you don't want to get stuck on the trails after dark.
  • There are several area restaurants and lodges where you can enjoy refreshments and spectacular views.

How to Get There

The most convenient way to get to Mt. Medvednica is on a guided tour, since the circuitous route to Sljeme is a bit complicated. Trekking tours and mountain biking excursions typically include travel from Zagreb, off-road vehicle tours are best if you don't have hiking shoes, and foodies might prefer mountainside excursions that offer chestnut picking and truffle hunting.

When to Get There

Spring through autumn are the best times for hiking and biking, in Medvednica Nature Park, and Medvedgrad Castle hosts summer concerts in July. The weather typically turns chilly come November, and January is generally the peak season for winter sports. You should plan to visit when the weather suits your preferred outdoor activities.

Discovering Medieval History at Medvedgrad

Situated on the southern slopes of the mountain you can find Medvedgrad, a 13th-century castle that—following preservation and reconstruction—today offers visitors a place to encounter medieval history. The sight includes a chapel, defensive tower, and palace, though the top draw might be the annual medieval reenactment. Held on the last weekend of September, this celebration showcases medieval music, traditional recipes, and even lets visitors brush up on sword skills.
