POINT OF INTEREST

Morro da Urca

Urca, Rio de Janeiro, Southeast Brazil

Approximately half the size of neighboring Sugar Loaf Mountain in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the 720-foot (219-meters) Morro da Urca is by no means insignificant. In fact, Morro da Urca is a necessary, and often overlooked, stop on the cable car ride up to Sugar Loaf Mountain. Before heading off to the larger hill, wander around the turtle-shaped mound for spectacular views of Ipanema and Copacabana beaches, downtown Rio, Christ the Redeemer, and Sugar Loaf itself.

The Basics

In addition to the outstanding panoramic views from its peak, Morro da Urca also offers a scenic and well-traveled hiking trail at the base of the hill. The trailhead can be accessed from the small town of Urca. Upon arriving at the summit, stop by the visitor center for more information about the hill and residing area. Most tours to Sugar Loaf include a stop at Morro da Urca, but you can also book a separate excursion to Morro da Urca.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Check the weather before you ascend the hill for a cloud-free view from the top.
  • If you are hiking, the surrounding trees on the trail are home to curious monkeys. Please do not pet or feed the animals.
  • The visitor center has restrooms, a gift shop, and a cafe. There are also elevators available for those with limited mobility.
  • You can purchase cable car tickets at the base of Morro da Urca or at the top to continue on to Sugar Loaf.
  • Cable cars run every 30 minutes or when the car is full.

How to Get There

You can access the hiking trail or purchase a cable car ticket from Praia Vermelha (Red Beach) which is easily reached by taxi. Or you can take the Metro to the Botafogo station and walk to the ticket booth.

When to Get There

The entire complex is open daily from 8am to 9pm, and the ticket office is open from 7:30am to 7:50pm. Consider visiting early morning or late afternoon midweek for cooler temperatures, great visibility, and fewer people.

Visit Urca

Wander the quaint and historic district of Urca for shopping, dining, and sightseeing. The little town is located between the mountains and the bay, and is an often overlooked region. Rent a bike to pedal around town, sip an espresso at a cafe, or kick back on the beach.
