Moro Rock
Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park, CA, 93262
As you approach Sequoia National Park from the town of Three Rivers, a massive granite dome comes quickly into view: Moro Rock. Looming thousands of feet above Generals Highway, climb the staircase to the top for majestic vistas of San Joaquin Valley, the Giant Forest sequoia grove, and the peaks of the Great Western Divide.
The basics
The Moro Rock Trailhead lies roughly one hour north of Three Rivers along Generals Highway. You can drive to the trailhead during autumn, spring, and on summer weekdays, but it is closed to private vehicles on summer weekends—when you can take national park shuttles instead—and throughout winter.
The trail itself is a concrete and stone 350-step stairway to the top. Tours of the national park from Los Angeles and the Fresno area often include the hike, and sometimes make a point to catch sunsets at the trail's end. The western face of the dome is one of the most accessible and popular rock climbing sites within the park.
Things to know before you go
Plan to spend at least 20 minutes hiking.
Find accessible parking at the Moro Rock and Crescent Meadow lots.
Pets aren’t allowed on the trail.
The climb has handrails along the way for safety.
Though short, the hike can be strenuous; take your time to adjust to the elevation.
Sheer drop-offs make the trail unsuitable for families with young children.
How to get there
From the town of Three Rivers, drive about 24 miles (39 kilometers) north along Generals Highway into the national park and turn off onto Crescent Meadow Road, then turn right at the dead end and continue to the parking lot and trailhead at the end of the road. Free shuttles from the Giant Forest Museum take visitors to the trailhead during the summer months, typically from late May through early September.
When to get there
Moro Rock is open to the public in spring, summer, and fall, from around April to late October. The park is busiest through summer, so it’s best to make camping or accommodation bookings in advance and take advantage of the free shuttle service, as the car parks are often full. In winter—typically late October through March—roads to the rock close with snow, and the stairway is shut to the public.
Rock Climbing Moro Rock
Before you plan a climbing trip to Moro Rock, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, placing any fixed anchors requires a special use permit. Second, most of the rock closes in summer to rock climbers due to nesting peregrine falcons. Climbers should always respect wilderness rules: avoid motorized equipment, stay on trails, and climb clean.
