Montelbaanstoren

2 Oudeschans, Amsterdam, Netherlands

The Montelbaanstoren (or Montelbaan Tower) is a remnant of Amsterdam’s chaotic past: Built in 1516, it was originally part of the city's defensive walls and fortifications. Find it on the eastern side of Amsterdam's city center, along the Oudeschans canal, as well as on the canvases of Rembrandt and other Dutch masters.

The basics

The Montelbaanstoren is Amsterdam’s most historic tower. Though it was originally constructed in the 1500s, it grew in 1606, when a decorative octagonal lantern and spire were added to the top. Now, it stands 157 feet (48 meters) tall, a notable landmark along the Oudeschans canal. Though it no longer serves as a watchtower monitoring ships entering the harbor, it has become one of the city’s signature landmarks and a protected monument popular with tourists snapping photos.

Things to know before you go

  • Note that there are no interior visits here.

  • Given the height of the tower, the best photos are taken from a block or so away, ideally on the water.

  • For more tower fun, check out Schreierstoren (Weeping Tower), Munttoren (Mint Tower), and Westerkerk Tower.

How to get there

There are three basic ways to reach Montelbaanstoren. You can take the metro to Nieuwmarkt station and walk for about 10 minutes along Oudeschans canal; otherwise, catch tram 26 to Kadijksplein and walk for about 5 minutes, or head there by boat, disembarking at any dock along the canal. The distinctive tower is photogenic from several angles, making it easy to snap as you approach.

When to get there

It’s worth stopping by Montelbaanstoren anytime, but go early in the morning or near sunset for the best light for photos. Since there are fewer crowds in the morning hours, get up early for a sight-snapping tour, if you can.

Cruise views

Book a canal cruise, and you may not have to make a special stop to see Montelbaanstoren—you might spot it right from the water (depending on your cruise’s route), which is the tower’s best angle. Canal cruises double as both sightseeing and transportation, getting you around the city as you get to know it, too.
