Mönchsberg Lift (Mönchsbergaufzug)

Gstättengasse 13, Salzburg, Salzburg, 5020

Climbing 60 meters (197 feet) in just 30 seconds, this elevator makes getting to the Mönchsberg Plateau and the Mönchsberg branch of the city's Modern Art Museum a breeze. Even if you don't plan to visit the museum, it's worth taking the ride up to the viewing terrace, a great place to photograph Salzburg's skyline.

The Basics

This elevator connects Salzburg’s Altstadt (Old Town) to the Mönchsberg, a plateau area that towers around 508 meters (1,667 feet) above the city. Although the plateau was among The Sound of Music’s many filming sites, these days the Mönchsberg is best known for the Modern Art Museum. In the same building as the museum, Restaurant M32 draws in visitors and locals alike with its European fare and fantastic city views.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • The Mönchsberg Lift is a must-visit for travelers wanting to get great views over the city without having to hike to the top of the Mönchsberg Plateau.
  • Dogs are permitted but must be leashed and muzzled.
  • Tickets are required to take the elevator, with discounts available for families and groups. Bearers of the Salzburg Card get a free one-way trip.
  • The Mönchsberg Lift is wheelchair-accessible.

How to Get There

The elevator’s entrance is located at Anton-Neumayr-Platz in the Altstadt, one block from the Salzach River and about a 5-minute walk from Mozart's birthplace. If you’re coming from a different part of the city, you can take line S3 of the S-Bahn to the Salzburg Mülln-Altstadt station—from there it’s a 10-minute walk.

When to Get There

The Mönchsberg Lift is open daily, with extended evening hours in July and August and reduced hours on December 24 and 31. It also stays open late during special events and when the Modern Art Museum’s M32 restaurant is open. Check at the ticket counter for the most up-to-date details.

Museum of Modern Art Salzburg Mönchsberg

At the top of the elevator, this branch of the city's Modern Art Museum features four floors of bright galleries showcasing works from 20th- and 21st-century Austrian and international artists. The museum’s other (original) branch is Museum der Moderne Rupertinum, located in the Altstadt, just down the street from the Domplatz.
